Jeff Berlin – How a Tilta Camera Cage is like Flying

October 13th, 2016|

This is a guest post by Jeff Berlin, a Los Angeles based photographer and cinematographer. He is a Sony Artisan and an experienced aviator.  A few years ago, I was flying an airplane called a Cirrus SR22 from Los Angeles to Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras for a project. If you’re unfamiliar with this airplane, I’ve found the best way to describe it to non-pilots is to ask them to picture a 3-Series BMW but with wings. The SR22 is the best-selling single-engine piston aircraft in the world, and rightly so. And it’s a lot of fun to fly. On this [...]

With gimbals and Steadicams, there’s no excuse to have shaky video footage now unless cinematographers are going for that shaky cam effect. Not familiar with what a gimbal stabilizer is or what gimbals are? Well, handheld 3-axis gimbals are used in stabilization systems that are designed to give the camera operator the independence of handheld shooting without camera vibration or shake. Basically, you can use gimbals with a DSLR camera, mirrorless camera, or a smartphone to shoot stable and smooth videos. Ikan offers a full line of handheld gimbals for DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, smartphones, or GoPro cameras. In addition, we [...]

Lighting Trends in Cinematography and the CV600

October 4th, 2016|

Lighting has a huge impact on the end product whether it be an indie film, a photo, or a blockbuster movie. Figuring out how to correct the lighting can be hard especially if you don’t have the right tools. With the current trends in lighting and color always changing, cinematographers will need the proper tools to keep up. Fortunately, spectrometers and color and exposure meters exist to help with figuring out how to handle and manipulate lighting and color in a scene. Current trends The Cinematography School at the New York Film Academy regularly chats with filmmakers and gathered up [...]

Testing the CV600 Spectrometer at Planes of Fame

September 29th, 2016|

Jay P. Morgan of The Slanted Lens recently tested out our CV600 spectrometer while interviewing a WWII veteran, Wilbur Richardson, about his book, Aluminum Castles. The CV600 is a color spectrometer as well as an exposure meter. In the video, Jay used the CV600 spectrometer to balance the different temperatures in the hanger at the Planes of Fame air museum in California. Since the CV600 is small and compact, it’s easy to take it with you wherever you need to go. In the spectrometer, you can choose what you want to measure such as the CCT, Lux, TLCI, or foot-candle [...]
